The Remarkable Historical Mosques of Turkey

The Blue Mosque of Sultan Ahmed

The Blue Mosque, located in Istanbul, is perhaps the most popular historical mosque in Turkey. Located in front of the famous Hagia Sophia, the mosque receives many tourists who travel to Turkey for its magnificent architecture, layout, and decorations.

Constructed at the beginning of the 17th century by Sultan Ahmed I, the 14th Ottoman ruler, the Blue Mosque is one of the largest and most impressive all over the world and it is included in various Turkey travel packages.

The Suleymaniye Mosque

Al Fatih Mosque

Al Fatih Mosque is one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture. Located in Istanbul in a neighborhood that holds the same name, Al Fatih, the mosque was constructed in 1470 by Mohamed Al Fatih, or Mohamed the conquer, who managed to enter Constantinople after weeks of sieges. The mosque is included in many tours to Turkey as one of the most remarkable Islamic monuments in Turkey.

However, unfortunately, the Al Fatih Mosque was badly damaged during the earthquake that occurred at the beginning of the 16th century. Afterwards, the whole complex was rebuilt in 1771 and the Ottomans tried their best to retain the original elements of the old mosque. However, with the main dome and several walls collapsing, the mosque has to be totally rebuilt, but the results were also amazing.
