DAY 2: Panama City

  • Meeting at Tocumen International Airport. Transfer to the hotel in Panama City.

DAY 3: Tour to Fort San Lorenzo + Agua Clara Canal Locks

  • At 8:00 in the morning, we will head to the Caribbean coast. Crossing to the right side of the canal, through the new bridge opened on August 2, 2019, we will proceed to the San Lorenzo Nature Reserve. Perched on a cliff at a height of 25 meters above sea level, the majestic San Lorenzo fortress, built by the Spaniards in 1596, stands at the very edge of the land. From here, there is a magnificent view of the Caribbean Sea and the mouth of the Chagres River.
  • The Caribbean coast of Panama, with its beautiful wild beaches, islands, and bays, holds the history of great conquests by conquistadors and daring pirate attacks. The names of Francis Drake, Henry Morgan, Edward Vernon, and other buccaneers are inseparably linked to the fortresses of San Lorenzo and Portobelo. To safeguard their treasures from maritime marauders, King Philip II of Spain ordered the construction of a series of fortresses along the Caribbean coast, most of which have survived to this day: San Lorenzo, San Jeronimo, Santiago de la Gloria, San Fernando, and San Fernandín.
  • In 1980, all colonial buildings and fortresses of the 17th and 18th centuries on the Caribbean coast of Panama were included in UNESCOs list of cultural heritage.
  • During this tour, we will also visit the new Agua Clara Locks on the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal. The Agua Clara Locks, which began operations on June 26, 2016, allow large vessels known as PANAMAX or NEOPANAMAX to pass through from the Caribbean Sea. The operation principle is the same as the old locks: lowering or raising ships by 26 meters above sea level. This three-chambered lock has a visitor center located on a cliff, providing an excellent vantage point to observe ship movements. Telescopes are installed, offering views of Lake Gatun and ships waiting their turn to enter the canal. The Visitor Center also features a film about the construction of this lock.
