Many historians assert that the Chinese civilizations go back to the 15th century BC.  An archeological finding that was discovered in the country recently and date back to more than 1500 years has shown an image that looks similar to Chinese contemporary arts. The history of modern China actually started with the foundation of the Republic of China under the leadership of Sun Yat Sen in 1911.

Another important stage of the Chinese history is marked with the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China forming the largest country in the whole world with more than 1.4 billion people living in the nation. Many facts of the Chinese history were the subject of legends and myths until the year 1959 when important archeological findings were unearthed stating many important facts and making many numbers and figures much more accurate.

Many scholars believe that communities have been living around the fertile lands of China for more than a millennium. However, the first exact recording of the Chinese history dates back to 3500 years ago. Historians may sometime refer to this early period of the recorded Chinese history as the era of the Shang dynasty, this period was only the time for paving the road for the unified imperial China to rise.

From China was totally far away from unification during the period from the 7th century to the century 4th BC. In fact, this period was named by many historians as the period of the warring states when each independent state started trying to invade other states looking for more wealth and resources.

As a natural result of these internal battles between many independent states in China, the military sciences developed greatly and iron replaced bronze in the manufacturing of weapons and different tools as well. 

This period has also witnessed the rise of many brilliant military tacticians and the list includes Sun Tzu, the writer of the “Art of War” which is still studied in many military academies around the world until today.

Due to their great abilities in riding horses and cavalry, the Qin dynasty was able to defeat all the other tribes and to unite the country in the 2nd century BC. This dynasty was actually called Ch'in and this was where the word China came from.

The first emperor of the Qin dynasty took control over most of the lands; establish a system, and laws to be followed. The Qin dynasty was also able to unite the languages of the people and the writings and they even had a common currency.

Qin- Shi Huang, the first ruler of a unified China ordered his men to build the Great Walls of China in the 2nd century BC to protect his lands against any invaders. The Great Walls of China was actually restored and rebuilt for another 1000 years.

Believing in the afterlife, Qin- Shi – Huang, had many sculptures of soldiers, known as the terracotta warriors, buried with him to accompany him in his afterlife.

All the conflicts and battles that took place between those three sections of China resulted in a rich literature that is still present until today. Many of the stories of this period were translated to several languages and even produced for television and some video games as well.

This period was full of harsh struggles and massive combats. All the people lived miserably and many Chinese people died in this tough phase of the Chinese history.

Around the 3rd century AD, the most remarkable event of this phase was the introduction of Buddhism in China when the ideas and principals of this religion came to China from India.

Many religions were practiced in China during the coming periods of time from the 3rd to the 8th century AD. A number of monks came from Asia Minor informing the people about Christianity and one of the companions of the prophet Mohamed came to China to spread the thoughts of Islam.

Many Islamic and Christian structures were built in China afterwards and then they became historical highlights of the country that tourists are always careful to visit when they travel to China.

During the same era, the first and only women to rule over China came in power when Wu Zetian took the power from the Tang dynasty and became the queen for a period that is estimated to be around 25 years.

In the 13th century AD, Genghis Khan, one of the most powerful military leaders was able to united the nomadic tribes in Mongolia and formed one of the most powerful armies in history. He soon took control of most of China and many other lands around Mongolia.

When Genghis died in 1227, his grandson, Kublai, took control of the rest of the lands of China and established his new capital in 1271, the city that will later on have the name, Beijing, which will afterwards become one of the major touristic cities included almost in ever custom tours to China. This event marks the beginning of the first dynasty that does not belong to the Hans, the largest tribe in China.

Not only skilful in the art of wars, the Mongols also encouraged the spread and development of different types of art and carried out great public projects like enlarging water canals and extending traveling routs.
